Finding Work

There are two major reasons for going to any foreign country:Of course you can make a holiday of a student summer camp job, and you may have taken up a job just to follow up your interest in the USA. But though all reasons are in some ways interconnected it helps to establish what your priorities. Sort out in your own mind what the main reason is for wanting to stay in the USA. If it is a relaxing holiday then don’t undermine that perfectly reasonable aim by being on the telephone all the time trying to set up useful business links!  Short-term options for young people will be dealt with later in Chapter 10. Let’s look now at the various possibilities for those who don’t have to be back for next term or for a purely UK job.

Staying In The Usa For Fun

Many people find going abroad is something for the young, with few ties, between college and going to work. But consider the alternatives:

Staying in Britain Going to the USA
Getting into a career Getting experience of life
Getting into the housing market Not being tied down by a mortgage
Having a family while fit and young Being more flexible and able to take risks
Getting a job while one is still available Expanding your horizons
Building up seniority in a firm Gaining useful confidence
Becoming a sober, hard-working citizen Changing job tracks

Now add your own counter arguments in the spaces provided! Once you’ve done that, choose which options are for you. If most are in the left-hand column:

  • you could work hard at home but holiday in the USA
  • you could try for some US-based experience with your firm
  • you could house-swap for three or four weeks one year.

If most are in the right-hand column:

  • consider taking a degree in the USA
  • take a long trip with casual work
  • consider what foreign experience would interest an employer when you got back.
